It’s a small world in every way except when shipping! Right? Some of you want vellum and kits but the expensive postage plus the added customs costs makes it difficult.
We have found a partial answer to this problem through our new store on Etsy called AltPhotoSupply. Etsy has developed a good system for small packages (under 4 pounds) by using a consolidator for its international shipments. We send our packages to one location to be combined and shipped in a more economical way. This is new for us and, so far, it is beneficial to our international friends. Some of you who live in other countries have wanted to take Dan’s Photo Gilding Workshop Online but there was a problem getting the vellum and other supplies to you. In this store, we have both inkjet and darkroom vellum, the Intro Kit for Photo Gilding and the Experimenter’s Kit for Photo Gilding. If you want the cheaper international shipping, please use the Etsy store for your purchase. People in the USA can use either the Store on this website or the Etsy store available using the button on this page. Is this the vellum that Dan uses for photos backed with 24K Gold Leaf?
The vellum is available in two types: Inkjet Vellum for photographers printing images using an inkjet printer and Darkroom Vellum for those using wet darkroom processes like platinum and palladium printing or cyanotype processes. Dan uses this vellum for both platinum prints backed with gold leaf and for inkjet prints combined with precious metals or gesso.
How much will I save ordering through the AltPhotosupply store on Etsy?
There are too many variables to give you a specific answer, however you'll be given a specific cost when you order. You may have additional customs costs depending on where you live.
How do I take an online workshop with Dan?
Some of the online sessions do not need materials and are easy to join. If you want to take a hands-on workshop on Photo Gilding, you need to purchase the Intro Kit for Photo Gilding and sign up for a workshop that allows about one month for the kit delivery. If you are registered for a workshop when you order your kit, we can add some 24K gold and extra vellum to make up for the extra cost of the kit.
DOES THE INTRO KIT CONTAIN EVERYTHING I NEED TO MAKE A GILDED PHOTO?
All you need is an inkjet printer (or your usual darkroom process). To reduce wrinkles in the vellum, however, many people prefer using an acrylic spray rather than the water-based liquid varnish that comes in the Intro Kit. The kit is as simple as possible and transporting aerosol sprays can be difficult. Dan will send you product recommendations that might be available to you.
