Real World Peru

from colorful cobblestone streets to the Sacred Valley of the Incas

April 20-28, 2018
Experiencing the spiritual wonder of Machu Picchu, sampling the local food, walking the terraces between 500 year old Peruvian saltpans, sharing a laugh with an older native woman at the weekend market — a trip to Peru is an adventure for the culturally inquisitive photographer.  Enjoy 9 days and 8 nights in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, joined by photography group leaders, Dan and Jill Burkholder, led by an experienced guide who knows the country and people of Peru.

Every day and evening will be filled with photographic opportunities. Any digital camera is welcome — from DSLR to Mirrorless to iPhone — as long as you have a way to get your images onto an iPhone or iPad for viewing and editing.

We’ll enjoy a lightweight, modern approach to our image making with photo critiques and classes open to iPhones and iPads. That’s right, you can leave your laptops at home because it’s better spending your time making photos and memories rather than trudging through Photoshop and Lightroom. You’ll discover the joy of editing on your iPhone during lunch or on your iPad in the middle of the night. You’ll be amazed at what you learn as you shoot and process the modern, compact and lightweight way — a dream for the travel photographer! Dan and Jill will be at your side providing photographic knowledge, experience and a light-hearted approach to sharing friendship and making memories during this uniquely South American journey.
The workshop group will gather in Lima, Peru, and fly the next morning to Cusco, where we meet up with our private transportation to the Sacred Valley. With a limit of 8-10 participants, we'll be able to move as a smaller group, easily blending into the local agricultural markets and neighborhoods, observing the Real World Peru. The workshop price is $4600.

•  Eight nights in superior hotels*
•  Various location fees and shooting opportunities
•  Ground transportation in Peru (including bus tickets from Aquas Calientes—Machu Picchu and return)

Harry Sandler  On Sept. 2, 2017, the photography and music world was devastated to lose Harry Sandler after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer. We thought Harry would be making this trip with us and we know that he would be thrilled that such a great group of travelers will make the trip in his memory. Anyone who knew Harry will tell you that he lived a life dedicated to adventure, love and friendship. He was one of a kind.

Prerequisites and Medical Concerns

In this workshop, we visit locations such as Machu Picchu that are at high elevations between 8000-11,000 feet. Ask your doctor about activity at high altitudes. Bring lightweight clothing and comfortable walking shoes because you’ll spend lots of time on your feet.

Any digital camera is welcome — from DSLR to Mirrorless to iPhone — as long as you have a way to get your images onto an iPhone or iPad for viewing and editing.

iPhones and iPads should be newer models that have the smaller Lightning connectors (not the wider, 30-pin charging cables from days of old) because these models make it much easier for us to share images during classroom critiques and lessons.

A month before departure, you will receive additional detailed information to help you prepare for your adventure. From camera gear advice to packing suggestions, you’ll get lots of help to ensure your trip is one of learning and image making instead of problems and hassles.
