“Stepping out of the cold on this snowy December day, I chanced upon the warmth of a tiny Ukrainian shop.”
—Dan Burkholder
I made this photo on Christmas Day 2018 in the Ukrainian town of Solotvyno, on the bank of the Tisza River. Upon entering the tiny general store, I was taken by the simplicity of the scene as well as the room’s atmosphere, rich with texture and color. As I wandered the store — shooting unobtrusively from the waist using silent shutter mode — the shopkeeper’s friendly gesture made for a compelling, yet eminently human image. Returning to this Ukrainian town in 2019, I stumbled upon this same shop and was able to share the photo with the shopkeeper. Her delight with the photo was touching.
The Shopkeeper, Ukraine, 2018 is presented as a 7” x 7” archival inkjet print on 11” x 14” Hahnemühle Museum Etching 350gsm paper. The subtly textured, natural white paper complements the mood of the image perfectly. This luxurious, heavy weight paper remains flat during matting and framing to display the photo handsomely.
Unlike some artist print programs that donate only a small portion of the proceeds toward charitable relief, my Ukrainian Relief Print Offer will maximize the funds going toward humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. All print sale proceeds (less only materials and shipping expenses) go to Direct Relief (https://www.directrelief.org/emergency/ukraine-crisis/), a highly regarded organization with a 100 score from Charity Navigator (https://www.charitynavigator.org/ein/951831116). I will not personally make any money from this print offer. Please use the Coupon Code: SHIPFREE to receive free shipping.
Thank you for joining with me in support of the Ukrainian people during this historically crucial time. I hope the print is a constant reminder of your generosity and humanity.
