Learn how to create prints with the look, feel and intrigue of handmade prints without the expense and hassle of a wet darkroom. - All of the skills learned in this workshop can be applied to the classic darkroom for those wishing to print on vellum with platinum/palladium, cyanotype, etc.
A materials fee (included in the workshop price) covers the papers, precious metals and other neat stuff used in this materials-intensive workshop to make a small portfolio of wonderful prints. Additional materials will be available for purchase if time and productivity permit.
- Participants should bring a laptop with Photoshop installed (CS 6 or later). Computers should have enough RAM, storage space, etc. so Photoshop runs smoothly. Also bring a thumb drive (8GB or larger recommended) for easy transfer of images as we print them.
- Participants should bring an 8.5” X 11” portfolio box (or larger) for safe transport of finished prints. A “Preparing for Class” letter with more details (image preparation, etc.) will be sent to participants before class. Both color and monochromatic images benefit from these exciting printing techniques.
About the Instructor
Dan Burkholder is known for looking over photography’s horizon to discover new ways of capturing and expressing the photographic image. In the early 1990’s Dan wrote the groundbreaking book Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing, which opened door for legions of image-makers wishing to combine the precision of digital imaging with the warmth and charm of the handmade print. After Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast in 2005, Burkholder recorded the chaos of post-Katrina New Orleans in his poignant monograph, The Color of Loss, the first coffee table book photographed entirely with high dynamic range (HDR) techniques. In 2012, Burkholder led the mobile photography revolution with his forward-looking book iPhone Artistry.
Dan earned his BA and Master’s degrees in Photography from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. His platinum/palladium and pigmented ink prints are included in private and public collections internationally. Dan’s web site is www.danburkholder.com.
